Your First Day

It is not long now until you arrive in Rotorua.  Thank you for choosing to come and study with us. We are all very much looking forward to welcoming you into our RELA family. We are sure you will have an excellent time and learn a lot of very useful English.

We have an online test for you to take to assess your English level. After you have paid your school fees, we will send you a link to complete this online. We prefer you to complete the test before you arrive at school. However, if you can’t, you can do this on your first day at school. The test is to find out which class we should place you in.

On your first morning at RELA, please come to the school office before 9.00am. You will be met by one of our staff members and they will show you to the student room where you can meet some of the other new students and have a cup of tea or coffee.

At 9.00am, you will meet Chris, our Principal, Jan, our School Manager, and our Director of Studies, Ellie. They will look after you for the morning and take you through an orientation programme. This will include an introduction to our school and to Rotorua. This is an excellent time for you to get to know the other new students who are starting.

As well as Chris, Jan, and Ellie and the other new students, you will also meet Paula, who is in charge of our Activity programme and Kana who works in the office. All of us will be able to help you with anything you might need while you are at RELA.

Please bring something to write with, your passport, your visa (if you have a student or work visa) and insurance. If you are staying in a homestay, your homestay will give you some lunch on your first day. If not, it would be good to bring something for lunch or some money to buy something. You will be able to order lunch from the office, or we have a selection of instant noodles and rice to buy in the office. Alternatively, it is only a 10 minute walk into the city centre.

You will also receive a detailed orientation pack. This contains:

  • Details of RELA support services, including the School Counsellor, the Homestay Counsellor and counsellors who can talk to a student in his/her own language
  • Internal and external grievance procedures
  • Information on class levels
  • Attendance and attendance warning policies
  • The refunds policy
  • Detailed information about school facilities and procedures
  • Information about services and facilities available in Rotorua
  • Conditions of enrolment
  • Safety procedures
  • A stationery pack
  • Other information about RELA

All of us will take very good care of you and make sure you soon feel at home.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
